Part-time Staff Writer


Morgantown-based New South Media publishes regional magazines for national audiences. They include:

  • Morgantown, a bimonthly city publication;
  • WV Living, a quarterly statewide lifestyle magazine;
  • WV Weddings, a semi-annual weddings magazine;
  • Wonderful West Virginia, a monthly wildlife and culture magazine; and
  • Frequent contract publications in tourism, higher education, small business, and other sectors.

We are looking for an enthusiastic staff writer to join our editorial team part-time. You will work closely with the company’s managing editors.

As a staff writer, you should be able to perform thorough research on a range of topics, have a keen eye for detail, and nurture a passion for engaging, creative writing. You should be able to deliver high-quality content ranging from social media posts to event coverage, travel pieces, profiles, and features.

New South Media’s mission is to change perceptions of West Virginia. We champion local lifestyles and small businesses. Ideal candidates for staff writer positions read widely in fiction and creative nonfiction and use that sensibility to continually improve their own writing.

Ultimately, we are looking for staff members who share the company’s values and want to grow with the company.

  • Write stories as assigned for our weekly Morgantown Lowdown eblast and for the print editions of WV Living, Morgantown, and WV Weddings, as well as other publications when needed.
  • Perform research on a wide range of topics.
  • Conduct interviews with sources.
  • Write content with readers’ needs in mind.
  • Maintain notes in written or electronic form.
  • Ensure your pieces are accurate, objective, and engaging.
  • Establish contacts and sources to use in future research.


  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or other relevant field;
  • Demonstrable portfolio of published articles;
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office and Google Docs, web search, and databases);
  • Good observation skills;
  • Excellent writing skills in English;
  • Ability to fact-check information, follow our house style, and meet strict deadlines
  • Must live in West Virginia; and
  • Availability to work from our office in Granville 20 hours per week.
